Tennessee mobile home move permit

TDOT's permit office issues mobile home permits through TNTRIPS: $50.00 up to 14 feet wide and $100.00 up to 16 feet for six days. Nothing wider than 16 feet may move.

Who issues the permit

The TDOT Oversize and Overweight Permit Office issues special permits for loads over the statutory limits. Its office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and its email is TDOT.PermitOffice@tn.gov.

TDOT takes no orders by phone or email. Every application goes through its TNTRIPS online system.

Regular single trip and annual permits may take up to three days to process.

TDOT rule 1680-07-01-.15 requires a special permit to move any mobile home wider than 8 feet 6 inches.

Fees and width limit

Short term (6 day) permits cost $50.00 for homes up to 14 feet wide and $100.00 up to 16 feet. Annual permits cost $1,000 and $2,000.

Homes wider than 16 feet may not be moved in Tennessee.

TDOT permit fees are not refundable.

Insurance

Anyone transporting a mobile home under the rule must carry at least $1,000,000 per occurrence in public liability insurance.

Companies prove insurance on the ACORD form. Private individuals must also show proof of insurance, but not on the ACORD form.

The permit is issued only in the name of the home's owner or the motor carrier's owner.

When the home can travel

Mobile homes move from sunrise to sunset, Monday through Saturday.

TDOT's FAQ restricts mobile home movements to daylight hours only.

No escorted oversize movement may use interstates or highways from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays in Davidson, Rutherford, Hamilton, Knox and Shelby counties.

Moves are prohibited on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Escorts

Under the 14 foot mobile home annual permit, front and rear escorts are required on two lane highways and only a rear escort on interstates and four lane highways.

The 16 foot mobile home annual permit requires both front and rear escorts.

Under the general overwidth rule, loads over 13 feet 6 inches and up to 16 feet need front and rear escorts on all highways.
